Abstract

The Brazilian national team in the 1982 World Cup is commented on daily, both positively (due to the aesthetics of its game) and negatively (due to its early defeat in the competition). Given its relevance, this study undertook a phenomenological description of the games that Brazil played in this competition. Thus, the objective was to highlight the questions that arose for the researcher while watching the games. In this process, we noticed the differences in relation to contemporary football, evident in a less methodical organization of the teams and a greater protagonism of the players. We also discussed how the reverberation of the elimination game (against Italy) is associated with a racist view of that team, which, consciously or unconsciously, influences the way we deal with several issues in contemporary Brazilian football.
