Independe de tamanho e de características físicas a atribuição da alcunha “lugar” às diversas percepções do homem sobre os espaços vividos. Da lareira à nação, é vasta a gama de fenômenos que podem ser tidos como lugares. Em seu texto, publicado em 1973, Yi-Fu Tuan amplia e eleva as discussões acerca da multiplicidade de lugares, os quais são legitimados pela experiência, dentre eles o lar e seus interiores, a cidade e sua urbanidade, a vizinhança, a região e a nação-estado. Experienciar tais lugares ativa e passivamente é primordial, uma vez que o lugar é construído a partir da experiência física, mental, sensorial, psicológica no espaço vivido: é centro de significado.
