This paper proposes an analysis of the short story “O convívio”, by João Gilberto Noll, based on the recognition of literature as a privileged space for reflection about the paradoxes of our times. The propositions of Jacques Derrida concerning hospitality and the reflections of Giorgio Agamben about friendship are the main tools to support understanding the relationship between the protagonist of the story and his pupil, which begins with the attempt to erase otherness, to shape it violently to a pre-established pattern, for an unconditional acceptance of difference as peremptory requirement for absolute sharing, without reservations, among the subjects.
