ABSTRACT

The positive effects of rapid maxillary expansion (RME) to treat transverse deficiencies have been demonstrated over the years in several articles on diversified methodologies. The aim of this article was to review the literature and evaluate the effect of the rapid maxillary expansion in breathing. It can be concluded that RME is often recommended to treat patients with maxillary discrepancy, being evaluated positively in relation to the increase of the oral and nasopharyngeal space and consequent effects on respiration. A multi-disciplinary approach for the most effective treatment when there is respiratory compromise is necessary.
