Resumo

Guanabara Bay is located in the heart of Rio de Janeiro City(22°54'S, 43°15'W) and an estuarine region for severa! riversand canais of high-level density areas of populations andindustries. As a matter of fact the Bay has been used as aplace to release waste of different sources. The degradationof this environment has been responsible for the negativeeffects on the fishing areas. L.P.H. Oliveira & L Krau (1976,Mem. lnst. Oswaldo Cruz, 3 (2-4): 435-449, Rio de Janeiro)have referred that pollution in Guanabara Bay has been knownas a problem for the future since 1930.
