Abstract

The use of austempered nodular cast iron (ADI) in engineering projects has gained considerable notoriety due to its improved mechanical properties, such as increased mechanical and wear resistance, resulting from subjecting nodular cast iron to austempering heat treatment. Despite improved mechanical properties, manufacturing components with specific geometries has not yet been fully mastered. There is a lack of information about the influence of machining conditions on the residual stresses of components manufactured from this material. Knowledge about the residual stresses incident after machining can precede failures of the component in service since the incidence of residual stresses has harmful effects when tensile or beneficial when compressive in machined components. This work aims to study the relationship between the variation of cutting parameters in face milling of ADI class 3 in generation residual stresses. Milling was carried out under factor analysis of three variables at two levels. Cutting speed was the parameter that most influenced residual stresses since increasing cutting speed made stresses less compressive.
