Abstract

This article proposed to address workers' football in Brazil, more specifically in the city of Campos dos Goytacazes/RJ. The objective of this work was to understand mill football in Campos dos Goytacazes as a cultural product inherent to the agro-industrial development in the municipality, which occurred at the beginning of the last century, in line with the emergence of a sporting culture in the city. To achieve this objective, a bibliographical survey was used as a methodology in light of the main authors who supported this subject and field work to obtain information from individuals who experienced the process. The results indicate that mill football in Campos dos Goytacazes was developed from community ties and sociability relationships between workers at the municipality's alcohol and sugar plants, and it is worth noting that this scenario was possible due to the heyday of the agro-industrial sector. Therefore, it is concluded that the dismantling of local alcohol and sugar production in the 70s, which decreed the closure of several industrial units in the sugar and alcohol sector, directly influenced the functioning of the plant teams in a cascade effect, causing the decline of their clubs, which took the path of amateurism and extinction.
