Abstract

In the decade of 1960 emerges in Social Sciences the Critical Theory of Sport. It has been very critic on sport because of its structure affinities with work, its reification processes and its position in the schemas of mass culture. The critics on this theory point extremisms, little empirical material, the ideology force and a gap in considering the speeches and representations of sport’s protagonists. The aim of this paper is to analyze these processes. In this sense, it reviews the origins and main thesis of that theoretical movement, the critics on it and its possibly actuality. The critics are partly right when they observe some rigid thinking in Critical Theory of Sport, but many of that don’t take in grant the its advances on comprehension of sport spectacle. Alexandre Fernandez Vaz é doutor pela Universidade de Hannover, Alemanha e Bolsista de Produtividade em Pesquisa do CNPq (Nível 2 – Fundamentos da Educação). Professor do Programa de Pós-graduação em Educação da UFSC, onde colabora também com os Programas de Pós-graduação em Educação Física e Interdisciplinar em Ciências Humanas. É coordenador do Núcleo de Estudos e Pesquisas Educação e Sociedade Contemporânea (CED/UFSC/CNPq). É autor do livro Sport und Sportkritik im Kultur- und Zivilisationsprozess: Analysen nach Adorno & Horkheimer, Elias und DaMatta, publicado pela Editora Afra, de Frankfurt, em Segunda edição, entre outros trabalhos publicados na América do Sul e na Europa.
