Abstract
This paper aims at presenting and analyzing a sequence of six articles weekly published in the Brazilian newspaper Jornal do Brasil in the second half of 1944. One of the articles in the sequence was written the historian Hélio Silva, and journalist Otto Prazeres signed the other five. The articles reveal sport as a complex phenomenon, full of values, a space of dispute and tension, and more specifically, the soccer field as an arena of conflicts and often non-pacific coexistence of different orders of values. We have also attempted to investigate the rupture of fixed limits for young Negroes from economically lower layers in society in those days, who would find a way to participate in sport and climb socially by using the jogo de corpo (special body-moving skills).
