Abstract

Based on collected data from printed and photographic files of the Historical Files of the Jornal dos Sports, this article aims to reconstruct some biographical aspects related to one of the first founders of soccer supporters’ clubs in Brazil, Jaime Rodrigues de Carvalho (1911-1976). The creation of the “Charanga do Flamengo” in 1942 would contribute to an original interaction between two significant Brazilian cultural spheres, music and soccer, within a continuous process which comprised the period from the 1940s to the 1970s in Rio de Janeiro. The life journey of an anonymous civil servant who became the leading supporter of the Brazilian Official Soccer Supporters’ Club at international competitions allows one to notice how some peculiar social actors can create space and acquire legitimacy inside the competitive professional soccer world, by means of building both a discourse and an image which highlight the values of amateurism, selflessness and loyalty.
