Abstract

This paper analizes the first stage of the Jogos da Primavera in Sergipe during the period between 1964 and 1967. It departs from the principle that all sectors of society - political, educational and sportive - supported enthusiastically its fulfillment. The eager recognition from the community of Sergipe indicates an adequate context to sports expansion due to mediation between tradition and spectacle. The historically materialized contradictions reveal how sports grew in educative events because of its expression of modernity. It concludes that the media performed a fundamental role in the image making and the inspirations of the Jogos showing the historical need to understand the mediation between the social practice and the spectacle.
