Abstract

The Pan American Games of Rio de Janeiro-2007, while sport mega-event and a large urban development project, promoted several interventions in the geography of the city of Rio de Janeiro. We can emphasize the urban project for the Parque do Flamengo, and more precisely in Marina da Gloria, on the basis of purely private interests, non directly related to the specific needs of the sporting event. Such interventions demonstrate the authoritarian and entrepreneurship nature of urban policy, which used the symbolic force of this mega-event as a justification for aggression in green areas protected by law and reduction of democratic public spaces in the city.
