Abstract

The article analyzes the historical importance of sports to Portuguese communist political leaders and Portuguese communist and antifascist intellectuals. Covering a period that goes from the 30’s to the 60’s, the article shows that sports and other physical activities were not only conceived as an instrument of regeneration of the nation’s health - similarly to what was being done by other political ideologies - but also as practices that formed a communist militant profile.
