Abstract

This study proposes to analyze how the newspapers Diário de Pernambuco (PE) and Diário do Nordeste (CE), present in their journalistic narratives - related to the 2021 Copa América de Futebol, held in Brazil -, identity references based on football. It is questioned what, in fact, the Brazilian team symbolizes or even represents in the narratives of the Northeastern press during the Copa América 2021. The object of study was journalistic content such as reports, editorials, column texts, photographs and related captions to Copa América, published from May 30 to July 15, 2021. The investigation was carried out using the Categorical Content Analysis method proposed by Bardin (2011). The newspaper Diário do Nordeste (CE) addressed the theme explored in this study in 23 publications and the Diário de Pernambuco had 21, totaling 44 publications. The journalistic material was analyzed, interpreted, quantified and then the categories were defined: Brazil enters the field: end of the homeland in football boots?; Cup rejection in the country of football?; National team stars or disappearance of football-art? It is concluded that in the narratives of the newspapers studied there is a deconstruction of the representation of football in Brazilian society, especially related to the national team.
