Abstract

The practice of futsal by women has grown a lot in recent decades, and is influenced by numerous social factors, including gender issues, that are very present within the context of the sport, which points to a demand for more studies in this area. The aim of this study was to analyze the perception of adult athletes from an elite women futsal team in the state of São Paulo, in relation to the support of family and friends for the practice, relating to gender issues. More specifically, the study aimed to analyze the occurrence and possible influence of gender issues acting as a barrier to the practice of futsal for women. Nine semi-structured interviews were conducted with players from an elite team in the state of São Paulo. After analyze data with Reflective Thematic Analysis, the results were discussed based on the literature. It is concluded that the athletes still face several difficulties, related to prejudice, support and opportunities, many based on support for insertion and on the structure of the modality to maintain the athletes' engagement in futsal.
