Geographies of the body in the desert
moving along and inhabiting inhospitable spaces in Hernán Diaz’s In the Distance

The paper takes as a starting point some situations, processes and experiences presented in the novel “In the distance” (2017) by Hernán Díaz. They are selected to discuss some issues concerning movement and stay in natural environments as experienced by the main character for whom those environments are strange and unknown. In order to do this the article draws on theoretical contributions made by Geography and other social sciences to analyze the ways people relate to space, taking into account the subjects and their mobility and dwelling practices. Special attention is payed to the body and the senses as mediators between the individual and the environment.
