A relação paisagem e memória é tratada a partir de uma compreensão multifacetada do passado, como “um país estrangeiro”, que pode ser acessado, mas que mantém uma distância mediada por valores,
experiências e sentidos de lugar, sempre compreendidos a partir do
presente. O autor examina diferentes sentidos de passado (necessário, valorizado, negado, reconstruído, irrecuperável, ostensivo, alterado, inventado), apresentando elementos para investigar a relação cultural com o passado a partir das paisagens que criamos.
