Abstract

This study evaluated the level of knowledge about antimicrobial prescriptions among dentistry students and dentists in Brazil, particularly in Rio de Janeiro. Data was obtained through an online electronic questionnaire between March 2023 and March 2024. Most respondents (72.9%) reported having a good understanding of antimicrobial prescription indications, a perception that is significantly higher among professionals than among students. The majority (70.7%) reported prescribing antimicrobials for prophylaxis of infectious endocarditis in patients with various conditions, including diabetes, which is not recommended by international guidelines. There was no consensus about antibiotic prescription indication for periodontal or periapical abscesses without spreading, pericoronitis, and dry socket. Literature does not indicate such drugs in these conditions. Amoxicillin was the most frequently cited drug for prophylaxis and treatment of infections. Less than 30% of the participants demonstrated a comprehensive understanding of the diverse factors contributing to the development and dissemination of antimicrobial bacterial resistance. The knowledge about drug prescribing and bacterial resistance requires improvement in educational institutions, as well as professionals must remain up-to-date.
