Maxillary lateral incisor agenesis (AILS) is a congenital dental anomaly characterized by the absence of these permanent teeth, presenting significant challenges due to its effects on facial aesthetics, masticatory function, and psychosocial health. This narrative review aimed to explore treatment options, analyzing their efficacy and complications, as well as highlighting aesthetic considerations and their impact on the individual's quality of life. Initially, a search was carried out in the electronic databases: PubMed, Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO), Virtual Health Library (VHL), SCOPUS, Web of Science, LILACS and Brazilian Bibliography of Dentistry (BBO), using the descriptors present in the Health Sciences Descriptors (DeCS): dental agenesis aesthetic dental treatment performing the search in Portuguese and English. After searching and reading the studies, 20 were selected to carry out this study. Challenges associated with treatment include selecting the best approach for each patient, considering individual factors, and limited evidence on long-term efficacy. The emotional impact of the condition is also relevant, especially in adolescents and young adults. Therefore, it is crucial to consider patients' aesthetic and emotional concerns during treatment planning.
