This work discusses the rise of social democratic governments in South America in the 2000's using Brasil as a benchmark in the study of this political transformation. From an economic perspective, the phenomenon known as Maré Rosa will be treated here as a response to a socially costly neoliberalism in South America. The immediate result was a general response from the region causing the change of the economic policies of the nineties. This paper intends to present the Brazilian currency crisis between 1998-99 as it gave an opening to a new political way of thinking in Brazilian society [...].
