Abstract

The objective of this study was to report the case of a crossbred calf, 8 days old, with an increase in umbilical volume associated with myiasis, diagnosed as omphaloarteriophlebitis. The blood count revealed neutrophilia and hyperfibrinogenemia, and an ultrasound examination was also performed to assess the involvement of internal structures and confirm the diagnosis. Due to the severity of the condition, it was opted for the surgical treatment of the animal, through the technique of omphalectomy. During the surgery, therapy with antibiotics, antipyretics, analgesics and mucolytics was instituted, in addition to the hospitalization of the patient for continuity of systemic therapy and dressings. Seventy-two hours after surgery, excellent healing of the operative wound was observed and new laboratory tests detected a reduction in neutrophilia and fibrinogen, allowing medical discharge, with recommendations for daily dressings on the property and return, after 7 days, for reassessment and removal of the suture.
