The present paper approaches the novels by the Portuguese writer Lídia Jorge, highlighting the symbolic aspects of space. It considers, above all, the historical and political dimension of the different territories examined by the writer. At the same time, it investigates the importance of writing in the spacial construction and the dominance of passion – amorous and ideological – in the identity conflicts lived by the characters.
