Abstract

This article analyzes the dynamics of violence in the state of Rio de Janeiro between 2014 and 2024, based on data from the Public Security Institute (ISP-RJ), seeking to understand how inequalities shaped by social norms—especially those related to gender, race, and age—are associated with patterns of potential victims and social vulnerability. The study combines empirical evidence with the theoretical debate on inequality of opportunity and economic development, as discussed in the fields of development economics and political economy.
