Abstract

This paper describes the Moeda Social Arariboia program, a cash transfer policy in NiteróiRJ, Brazil. The program aims to tackle poverty and social inequality through the circulation
of a local currency, the arariboia, within the municipality. Eligibility requires registration
in the Cadastro Único, federal registry, while transactions are managed by the Instituto
E-dinheiro Brasil. The paper provides a historical overview of the program, its solidarity
economy principles, as well as an appraisal of its legal framework, eligibility criteria, and
characteristics of the target population based on sociodemographic data available in the
Census and the Cadastro Único
