Abstract

Unconditional Basic Income is a universal, unconditional and individual cash grant, which is seen by some as essential for tackling climate change. This article questions the proposal for a green UBI, by looking at the literature and the policy from Maricá, Rio de Janeiro. It argues that basic income faces institutional design challenges, possible consequences and embodies a tension between autonomy and promoting an ecological agenda, limiting the possibility we have to justify it as a green policy. It concludes with a call for a broader debate on the green transition.
