Abstract

Be (a she) howler and say to be a (he)howler: an analysis of women participation in the festivity Bugiada and Mouriscada of Sobrado, Portugal

The text analyzes the participation of women in the Feast Bugiada and Mouriscada, of S. João de Sobrado, a locality located in the north of Portugal. The festivity, of popular and religious character, remains as a space-time in which men, are not only the main participants, but the main protagonists. In light of the approaches on gender relations and inequality in popular festivities, this text describes how women have been gaining some presence in the festivity, however in a marginal and subversive way and highlights some of the main challenges for the continuity and the future of this festivity.

Keywords: Festivity; Gender; Women; Structure; Everyday life; Inequality.
