The Political participation of women in Portuguese democracy - analysis of the composition of national governments (1976-2019)

Abstract

The analysis of gender issues represents one of the central topics in the debate around equality. The consolidation of democracy has been carried out in with the adoption of policies to promote equality in politics. Through this study we intend to analyze the gender issue in the exercise of ministerial positions in the constitutional governments of the 3rd republic (Portugal), using a conceptual and empirical perspective, analyzing the different parameters of women`s participation in political life. Through a mixed approach (qualitative and quantitative), we seek to analyze the composition of constitutional governments considering the gender issue, as well to contribute to the study of the equality policies in Portugal.
