How to do things with images?

Photography and performativity in Judith Butler's Work

Authors

Abstract

Understanding the disputes of images in the visual field is fundamental to dismantle the logic that authorizes the circulation of certain images to the detriment of those that would disturb it. In this article, I aim to investigate how the philosopher Judith Butler discusses photography in her work in order to understand how the images act in the regulation of gender and sexuality. Is it possible to do things with pictures? Are the images performative? In that sense, as I intend to put forward, I believe that Butler offers clues to think about these issues.
