Abstract

There is a gap of empirical studies about the economic incentives and funding models of disinformation industries and initiatives in Brazil. The objective of this paper is to offer an analysis of programmatic advertisements that are displayed in stories from the far-right website Terra Brasil Notícias. To do this, we developed a native ad data scraping script from the MGID company, composing a database of 27,602 insertions over the course of a month. We found a farm network of content and ads containing viruses, gambling houses, financial scams, and miraculous body weight reduction substances. At the end of the paper, we discuss the contributions to the literature on misinformation and point to avenues for future studies.
