Torcidas organizadas e escolas de samba: Lazer e organização popular na Era Vargas

Authors

Abstract

The history of the working class in Brazil cannot be told solely through its protests, uprisings, newspapers, parties, unions, and strikes. The purpose of this text is to rescue and reflect on the history of the emergence of two other long-standing forms of popular organization, forged through recreational association, and which are often marginalized or forgotten: football fan clubs and samba schools. Through a comparative analysis, we realize that Organized Fan Clubs and Samba Schools were possible spaces for self-organization and collective expression, where networks of support and solidarity were built, and through which black, poor and peripheral subjects sought to affirm their identity and leave their mark on our culture and society.
