Contributos para a história do desporto no distrito de Leiria: uma análise do jornal Leiria Desportiva (1924-1925)
Abstract
This article is the result of an investigation into the spread of sport in Leiria, capital of the homonymous district, located in the central region of Portugal. The analysis focuses on the newspaper Leiria Desportiva, which circulated briefly between 1924 and 1925, being the first and only dedicated to this theme in the city during the First Republic (1910-1926). In this period, sport becomes a popular activity of great scope in the country. Not by chance, there was a gradual interest of leirienses in activities such as football, cycling, hiking and athletics. The methodology consisted of reading and digitizing 30 editions of the weekly, as well as the organization and description of modalities and topics related to sports in editorials. As for the theoretical framework, we used the studies of Pinheiro and Coelho (2012) on Sport, Republic and Press in Portugal, and the seminal work of Gonçalves (2000), which deals with amateur sports in Leiria, in the first half of the twentieth century.
