INVENTORY OF PREHISTORIC SITES IN THE CARIRI PARAIBANO GEOPARK PROJECT AREA, BRAZIL

The archaeological heritage is of major importance in building a certain area’s memory, allowing others to understand its history and encouraging an appreciation of the past as a tool for understanding the world in which one lives. The overall ignorance about the existence and value of archaeological sites may become one of the main factors behind their degradation. That being, this work intends to identify and spatialize the pre-historical archaeological sites located in the area of the Cariri Paraibano Geopark Project, which encompasses the counties of Boa Vista, Boqueirão, Cabaceiras and São João do Cariri, in the region of Cariris Velhos, in Paraíba. Based on both bibliographical and field researches, 55 sites were identified in the area of study, 11 of them not yet cited in scientific papers. In the elaborated map, it was possible to spatialize 36 sites, since the others were not detailed in the bibliography nor were they accessible in field. Discrepancies of toponymy and of sites descriptions were verified in the bibliography, as well as the possibility of more still unidentified sites existing in the area.
