STRUGGLE FOR LAND AND AGRARIAN REFORM IN THE RIO DE JANEIRO (1950-2018)

Abstract: This paper aims to analyze the struggle for land as well as the main agrarian reform policies adopted at Rio de Janeiro between 1950 and 2018 assuming the spatial transformations that happens to the rural dynamics of Rio territory. The work is the result of the collection of data performed annually by the Grupo de Estudos, Pesquisas e Extensão em Geografia Agrária from the Faculdade de Formação de Professores of Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro – GeoAgrária/FFP/UERJ. This collection is based mainly at Caderno de Conflitos no Campo Brasil from Comissão Pastoral da Terra (CPT). The contribution of Medeiros (2018) about the state and the private violence also must be considered, as well as the monitoring carried out by Alentejano (2007, 2013 e 2018) tied to the needs from social rural movements specially the Movimento dos Trabalhadores Rurais Sem Terra (MST). Therefore, the paper intends to investigate historically and geographically the rural workers resistance and the state actions involved in this process.
