ALTERNATIVE WATER SOURCE TO SELF-SUPPLY IN THE FACE OF HYDRIC SHORTAGE IN BRAZILIAN SEMIARID

The municipality of Serra do Mel has not an efficient water supply system, due to the infrastructure and the lack of availability safe sources of supply, in the midst of semiarid climate. In this way, the population has alternative sources of water supply, in addition living with a scenario of water insecurity. The research sought to investigate the sources of domestic supply and the uses of water in the municipality of Serra do Mel, contributing to understand the problem of self-supply and water scarcity in communities. For this, a survey was carried out in six villages of the 23 that make up the municipality of Serra do Mel. The main source of conventional supply in the municipality is groundwater, however, the population uses alternative sources, being rainwater, stored in several containers, and plate cisterns, bottled water, and water supplied by water-trucks, and the last two are acquired with the own financial resources of the household, which commits an average of 18% of the income. It is also concluded that due to the quality of the water provided by SAA, 49% of respondents use this water for domestic cleaning and animal watering, and 39% use the water for cooking and 12% use it for drinking purposes.
