Abstract

This first translation into Portuguese language brings to the Portuguese-speaking audience an article published in the North-American magazine of variety and contemporary art “ArtForum.”  Playing in a lighter academic field, in the heat of the moment when “Commonwealth” (2009) was released, Harvey and Hardt & Negri engage in a direct and open dialogue about the problems of the anticapitalist struggle in the twenty-first century. In the first part of the article, Harvey provides a thorough review of Hardt & Negri's book, paying tribute to them by exposing the limits of their arguments for the political struggle of multiple identities in the city, criticizing the hypothesis that the metropolis is now to the“multitude” in the same way that the factory was to the working class in the twentieth century. In the second part of the text, Hardt & Negri present their counterpoint, aiming to assert the urban environment in the process of planetarization as a factory of the “Common,” a locus for the production of new forms of political struggle and social relations of production and reproduction alternatives to capitalism. This is a fundamental piece for the crossroads where Marxism and critical and radical geography are today, in the mid-2020s, which could push forward the scientific thinking and its research topics in the coming decades.
