The main objective of this research was to identify and map the areas with the mildest (coolest) temperatures in the north-east of Brazil. In order to compare geoprocessing data with surface climate data, municipalities located at altitudes above 500 meters in the states of Ceará, Paraíba, Pernambuco and Rio Grande do Norte were selected. Digital Elevation Models (DEM) and the Google Earth Engine platform were used to map the altimetric elevations and apply the vertical thermal gradient, which adjusts the temperature according to altitude. The results show that the mountainous areas have average annual temperatures of ~22.7 ºC while in the adjacent depressions this value is at least 4 ºC higher. An inverse correlation between altitude and temperature was confirmed through the interpolation of climate data in areas without climatological station coverage. Analysis of surface temperature data captured by LANDSAT satellites validated these estimates, demonstrating the accuracy of geotechnologies in the spatial representation of thermal data. The study highlights the importance of elevated areas as ecological refuges in the semi-arid region, suggesting that these regions have potential for sustainable use due to their milder climate and greater water availability as a result of their orography.
