Abstract

Until the last decade of the last millennium, the theme of public spaces was relatively little studied. When revisiting the works of some pioneering authors who, according to the specialized bibliography, were most responsible for the consolidation of this object of scientific investigation, it is possible to see that, taken together, these works make up a narrative: birth, maturation, regression, the decay, and crisis of public spaces. This article aims to reconstruct, in the light of the eyes of its proponents, the main arguments that support this regressive narrative of public spaces. It is, therefore, a reflection on the slow transformation of the nature of the concept and the characteristics and functions of public and private spaces in the Western world, in different historical and geographical contexts.
