Grapho-phonic-phonological transfers: an analysis of data from monolingual (Portuguese) and bilingual children (Portuguese-Hunsrückisch)

In this article we report the results of a study on the relationship between the change of graphemes representing voiced plosive phonemes by graphemes representing voiceless phonemes (and vice versa), and the VOT patterns of monolingual (Portuguese) and bilingual (Hunsrückisch-Portuguese) students. Students from three different groups participated in this study: monolinguals without contact with bilinguals (MR), monolinguals who are in contact with bilinguals (MP) and bilinguals (B). Were analyzed in the research, firstly, the number of writing changes of the graphemes <p,b>, <t,d> e <c,g> by 183 students from the three groups. Secondly, were analyzed the written data of 30 students (10 from each group) from the 183 participants analyzed previously. In relation to the VOTs, were analyzed, firstly, the speech patterns in Portuguese by the 30 participants. After that, were measured the Hunsrückisch VOTs by the 30 bilingual students. With regard to the results obtained, we found more graphemic changes in students from group B, followed by the students from group MP and then from MR. Concerning the VOT patterns, in the voiceless segments the MR group exhibited a shorter VOT than the bilingual group, whereas in the voiced segments the MR group exhibited a longer pre-voicing value than the bilingual group. We found in the results gradient values in the phonetic-phonological transfers analyzed. We therefore conclude that some of our participants show a positive correlation rate between the grapheme and speech production changes, which suggests a possible relation between the processes of writing and oral production.
