"Island contraints " revisited: a functionalist approach in light of the notion of "idea unit"

Abstract

This paper introduces a functionalist approach to structures of the “island constraints” type, thus named by Ross (1967) within a generative perspective. We will show that the restrictions those islands impose on the occurrence of constituents in certain structural positions is due to their functional status of “idea units”, therefore not allowing extraction or movement of any of the constituents across their boundaries.

Doutora pela Pontifícia Universidade Católica de São Paulo. É docente do Programa de Pós-Graduação em Estudos Lingüísticos da UFMG, onde desenvolve pesquisas em sintaxe funcionalista, de orientação norte-americana, com ênfase na interação entre Gramática e Discurso. É autora de vários artigos, publicados no Brasil e no exterior e co-autora do livro Aspectos da Gramática do Português: uma abordagem funcionalista, Editora Mercado de Letras, publicado em 2001.
