This paper focus on the reception of Ressurreição, Machado de Assis’s first novel, by examining “O Ideal do Crítico”, and highlighting how contemporary readers understood Machado de Assis’s first prose of fiction. It is also considered that Ressurreição (1872) is published ten years after the publication of his Teatro (1863), which was considered to be inappropriate, because it was not seen as an engaged piece. So, Machado’s next work of art would be engaged with the classical idea that the work of art is also a moral one, in which pleasure and moral lessons should go together. This idea will be clear by the end of the paper, as the readers will be able to follow it.
