A theory of enunciation: Benveniste and Greimas

Abstract

Benveniste formulates a theory of enunciation, which he conceives of as an intermediate between language (langue) and speech (parole). In his Structural Semantics, Greimas states that, in order to proceed to a good semantic description, it is necessary to normalize a text, that is, to eliminate from it the categories of enunciation. Greimas did not have then any theory of enunciation. Such theory will appear, in a more complete fashion, in Dictionary I, in which Greimas explicitly shows himself as an heir of Benveniste. Although Greimas inherited from Benveniste a theory of enunciation, he reformulated it, and gave it a dimension it did not have before, in order to make explicit the construction of text. He made it more precise, with operations of enunciative and enuncive disengagement, and he amplified it, with the operations of engagement and convocation.

Jose Luiz Fiorin, USP

É licenciado em Letras pela Faculdade de Filosofia Ciências e Letras de Penápolis (1970), tem mestrado em Linguística pela Universidade de São Paulo (1980) e doutorado em Linguística pela Universidade de São Paulo (1983). Fez pós-doutorado na Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales (Paris) (1983-1984) e na Universidade de Bucareste (1991-1992). Fez livre-docência em Teoria e Análise do Texto na Universidade de São Paulo (1994). Atualmente é Professor Associado do Departamento de Linguística da FFLCH da Universidade de São Paulo. Foi membro do Conselho Deliberativo do CNPq (2000-2004) e Representante da Área de Letras e Linguística na CAPES (1995-1999). Tem experiência na área de Linguística, com ênfase em Teoria e Análise Linguística, atuando principalmente em temas relacionados à enunciação. Além de muitos artigos em revistas especializadas e capítulos de livros, publicou diversos livros, entre os quais As astúcias da enunciação (Ática); Em busca do sentido: estudos discursivos (Contexto); Introdução ao pensamento de Bakhtin (Ática); O regime de 1964: discurso e ideologia (Atual); Lições de texto: leitura e redação (Ática). Organizou vários livros, entre os quais Introdução à Linguística I. Objetos teóricos (Contexto); Introdução à Linguística II.Princípios de Análise (Contexto).
