The present work, of bibliographic nature, aims to discuss the effects of the publication of the General linguistics course in 1916, notably the Saussurian notion of linguistic value, on the theorization of the Danish linguist Louis Trølle Hjelmslev (1937, 1943, 1948, 1954). The starting point for this return to the Hjelmslevian theorization is the discussion about the conception of oral representation by writing. Hjelmslev, by radicalizing the Saussurian assertion that language is a form and not a substance, argues for the non-existence of a first / natural substance, an argument that contradicts the idea that sound is the “natural bond” of language and, problematizes the elementary conception of oral representation by writing. We have seen from the discussion that Hjelmslev is not a translator of Saussurian ideas, instead he has made of the CLG a legitimate and innovative reading.
