Abstract

This paper presents a study of the nine Brazilian Portuguese translations of “The Dead”, from Dubliners (1914), by the Irish writer James Joyce (1882-1941). The first translation of this short story was published in 1942 and the last one in 2018. This paper is, probably, the first study that comprises all the translations of “The Dead” in Brazil: those that appear in one of the five complete translations of Dubliners (1964, 1992, 2012, 2012, 2018), those published as books (2014, 2016), the one inserted in a selection (2013) and the one published in a periodical (1942). This is a comparative study for which the authors have selected excerpts of the work in English to compare them with their translations as a means of valuing the work done in the translations, enlightening possibilities for interpretations and serving as a source for future translators of Joyce.

Leciona Literaturas de Língua Inglesa no Departamento de Letras Estrangeiras Modernas da Universidade Federal Fluminense (UFF). Suas principais linhas de pesquisa são Estudos Joycianos e Tradução Literária, com ênfase nas retraduções das obras de Joyce. Também é pesquisador afiliado ao Grupo de Estudos de tradução e Adaptação (ESTTRADA / UFRJ), à Cátedra de Estudos Irlandeses William Butler Yeats (USP) e ao Núcleo de Estudos de Tradução e Criação (UFF). É membro da diretoria executiva da Associação Brasileira de Estudos Irlandeses (ABEI) e criou, com Dirce Waltrick do Amarante, o grupo de pesquisa Estudos Joycianos no Brasil (2018).

É Mestre em Inglês: Estudos Linguísticos e Literários pela Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (UFSC), com dissertação na área de prosa curta irlandesa. Atualmente, conduz pesquisa de doutorado também pela UFSC, com foco em prosa curta irlandesa, abordando questões de multiculturalismo e social agency em contos de autores contemporâneos. É membro do Núcleo de Estudos Irlandeses (NEI), também na UFSC.
