This article canvasses the deixis in the poetry of Paulo Henriques Britto, considering it a way of suspension, through the “indexical meaning”, of the stabilized referenciality. In a first moment, the main goals will be to sketch some of the deictics/shifters in Paulo’s work, and come up with the indexical meaning as a common ground for two of the most recurrent themes of his poems – the frequent presence of first person and its metalinguistic predilection. Secondly, this research will investigate – from a double possibility of interpretation of a single verse – a subtle difference in the philosophy of language of two main philosophers of the twenty century.
