Wine in Ancient Egypt: A Mediterranean History
Abstract
ABSTRACT:With a history of more than 3000 years, the civilization of Ancient Egypt continues to fascinate today due to their complexity, cultural richness and artistic beauty. However, contrary to what we often believe, there are areas that approach us to the Egyptian civilization in an unsuspected way and one of them is the so-called "wine culture".
Irep en Kemet, "Wine in Ancient Egypt" is a three-years project of the Universidade Nova de Lisboa, funded by the Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia in Portugal, that as main objective aims to document and analyze, for the first time, the full corpus of images related to viticulture and winemaking in the ancient Egyptian tombs. This comprehensive and complete study will include not only the images but also the associated text, and at the end of the project will enable us to compare the method used by the Egyptians with the traditional method of wine elaboration used, even today, in Mediterranean countries like Portugal, Spain and France.
