This research aimed to analyze the connection of the innovation ecosystem of Rio Grande do Sul. In the methodology, a qualitative approach was adopted, with a case study protocol. Interviews, non-participant observation, analysis of documents, registration in archives and physical artifacts were used as sources of evidence. For the theoretical basis, a systematic review of the concept, actors and cases of the innovation ecosystem was carried out based on the analysis of publications in the Web of Science database. As a research technique, content analysis was used with the aid of the Nvivo 12 software under license in the analysis of all investigated content. As final considerations, the gaucho ecosystem over the years has had little support from the public initiative, with this, the leadership of the innovation ecosystem was strongly associated with the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul - UFRGS, Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul - PUCRS and University of Vale do Rio dos Sinos - UNISINOS. It is also noted the great relevance of Incubators and Technology Parks under the encouragement and coordination of the Gaúcha Network of Innovation Environments - REGINP and Community Universities in the interior associated with the Consortium of Community Universities in Gaúchas - COMUNG. In general, the innovation ecosystem of Rio Grande do Sul is one of the main Brazilian references, mainly due to its high degree of regionalization and scientific development.
