Abstract

The brown spider bite can lead to an extensive dermonecrotic lesion that is difficult to heal and close, and its treatment is a challenge. Skin grafts are free and independent segments of skin and epidermis transferred to a distant receptor site, normally used for extensive tissue loss in limbs and major dermatological defects in the trunk. In the present work, we report the case of a canine, mixed breed, male, 4 years old, weighing 13.3 kg, treated with an extensive skin lesion with evolution to dermal necrosis and substantial loss of skin tissue, associated with the bite by Loxosceles spp. A reconstructive surgery technique using island grafts was used due to extensive tissue damage without the possibility of primary closure with juxtaposition of edges. The clinical evolution was positive and his recovery was complete and faster, since healing by second intention takes longer to occur spontaneously, leading the patient to greater discomfort with a high risk of tissue traction and local contamination when care is not performed properly. Thus, reconstructive surgeries are a good alternative in the treatment of extensive wounds, their use in veterinary medicine has become more frequent with several techniques described that accelerate the healing process and allow a better final result for patients.
