Thematic scope: from “O cronista (1535)” to “O bispo negro (1130)”, by Alexandre Herculano

In the fruitful feuilleton tradition of the 19th century, the Portuguese author Alexandre Herculano (1810-1877) published the narrative “O Cronista (1535)” in 1839. Later, in 1851, he collected, in volumes, some of the fictional texts that had been published in serials under the title Lendas e Narrativas. In the book, “O Cronista (1535)” was republished as “O Bispo Negro (1130)”. However, the alteration involved more than a mere change in the title: what happened was a remodeling of the narrative in terms of temporal ambience, but also of central thematic scope. In this study, with the help of proposals by Eduardo Lourenço (1999; 2016), João da Rocha Oliveira e Silva (2014) and Maria de Fátima Marinho (1999; 2013), among other authors, we analyze the changes made between the two texts and the possible reasons for the reissue.
