Pão de açúcar, by Afonso Reis Cabral: an analysis of heterotopia and the ex-centric in the narrative thread

This article analyzes the novel Pão de Açúcar (2018) by Afonso Reis Cabral, which addresses the story of Gisberta, a transgender Brazilian woman, HIV-positive and an immigrant, who was murdered in Portugal. The objective is to examine the metafictional features of the work, focusing on the narrative voice, character construction, and the spatial dynamics present in the plot. Through the intersection between History and Literature, the study traces a theoretical path from classical tradition to postmodernism, based on the works of Linda Hutcheon, Ana Paula Arnaut, and Walter Benjamin. Michel Foucault’s concept of heterotopia and Ozíris Borges Filho’s topoanalysis guide the investigation of space as a symbolic and identity-forming element. By fictionalizing a real and painful episode, the novel contributes to the debate on the representation of marginalized subjects and encourages reflection on memory, symbolic violence, and the social role of literature.
