This paper aims to analyze Debaixo da Nossa Pele — Uma Viagem (2017), by Joaquim Arena, through two central thematic axes: displacement and memory. In this work, characterized by a fluid interplay of discursive genres, the narrative weaves together collective and individual memories related to the colonial past and its enduring traces in the present — constantly shaped by displacement, not only in geographical terms but also within the realm of discourse. The central hypothesis is that Arena’s writing, as it traverses temporal and spatial dimensions, asserts the right to memory — a right historically suppressed by repressive social structures such as colonialism, yet one that is inalienable and must be preserved as essential to the human historical-social experience.
